Getting to the other side?

My sister Liz and I have an expression we use when our kids/husbands are sick. Not sure when we picked it up, but it aptly describes the stage of illness/annoyance. It is all about being on the “other side”. If you are on the “other side” of the illness it indicates you are well on your way to being…well. If not,  you are still on the dark side.

This past week my husband and I have been on the dark side of the stomach bug. I know there are thousands of things worse than this bug, but it sure doesn’t feel like it when you have it. It really reduces you back to being a kid with greasy hair for days, laying on your bed for hours with an addiction to ginger ale.

When it comes to getting on the “other side” of this annoying sickness, my days follow a patterned prescription:

Step 1: Gotta have popsicles. Don’t bother with those sugar free ones. Load me up with sugar and ice. It is the first food that puts me on the road to the other side.

Step 2: Let me be very clear about this. Campbell’s Chicken Noodle soup, no other brand, no low sodium, no weird type of noodles and no crackers. Straight up 890mg of sodium soup.

Step 3: Toast. Again only smooshy non-wheat, non-gluten free Protestant approved white bread. Smear with butter, only butter no margarine or substitute.

Lather, rinse and repeat for a day or two. Once you are eating real solids again I say cap it off with the old standby or wine. After all alcohol kills all the bad bacteria right? Before you know it you will be sitting pretty. Clean hair, better breath and drinking something more potent than ginger ale!
